Old Masters paintings were painted in many layers over a grisaille underpainting of monotone colour, usually grey, to establish tonal values for the finished painting. Glazing was used as a way of enhancing and enriching colours not acheivable by just adding paint to the canvas. Paintings by the Old Masters could take months if not years to complete such was the complexity of their method.
